POLICY BRIEF
Governmental Programs to Prevent VAWG in the South Mediterranean

This brief summarises the assessment and its findings regarding preventive programs. The brief is intended to highlight the situation of preventive programs in the South Mediterranean countries and provide recommendations to governments on how to improve preventive programming and contribute to achieving the desired change.
The brief recommends institutionalising prevention measures in the relevant ministries and institutions to combat VAWG, especially Ministries of Health and Education and police. These measures primarily take the form of awareness raising, education, trainings, and community intervention programs. For compulsory education at all levels of schools and universities, curricula and textbox should promote equality between women and men and the right of women and girls to be free from violence. Moreover, teachers should receive trainings on how to educate children on the principles of equality. Media and community awareness raising activities are essential and should not be limited only to the 16 days of activism against VAWG as it is mostly the case in the South Mediterranean countries.
