EuroMed Feminist Initiative meets with parliamentary Committee of Women and Family Affairs in Jordan

EuroMed Feminist Initiative (EFI) held a meeting on Monday, March 13, 2023, with the Committee of Women and Family Affairs in the Jordanian House of Representatives in the frame of the project “Towards Stronger Economic Participation of Women in Jordan” funded by the European Union (EU). The meeting was attended by the president of the Committee H.E Mayadah Alshraim and the MPs members of the Committee.

The meeting discussed ways of cooperation for strengthening the role of women in Jordan and reducing obstacles to their economic, political, and social participation. The meeting also sought to bolster the partnership between EuroMed Feminist Initiative and the Committee of Women and Family Affairs to implement policies and mechanisms to combat Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). In this regard, the Regional Observatory on VAWG, hosted by EFI in Amman, presented their work on the Regional Index on VAWG and Women, Peace and Security Agenda (WPSA). 

 Ms. Boriana Jonsson, Executive Director of EuroMed Feminist Initiative highlighted the importance of overcoming stereotypes that hinder women's involvement and access to the labor market. “EuroMed Feminist Initiative remains committed to continuing our support to the advancement of women's participation in the labor market and in political and economic decision-making”, she added.

Ms. Mayada Shraim, President of the Committee, called for identifying and addressing the reasons that lie behind women’s withdrawal from the labor market, which negatively impacts economic growth.  She also stressed the need to develop and implement integrated and comprehensive legislation that enhance women participation and combat discrimination against them. The participants underscored the importance of creating more opportunities for capacity building and building partnerships among all stakeholders. The meeting concluded with a call to expand and deepen the cooperation between EuroMed Feminist Initiative and the Parliamentary Committee in particular in creating a supportive work environment for women on all social, cultural, and professional levels.
